Shopify
Serious ecommerce infrastructure for catalogs that have outgrown a simple store.
Our recommendation when ecommerce is the business, not a feature of it.
When Shopify is the right call
Shopify is built for one job and does it thoroughly. If selling online is the core of your business rather than an add-on, it is hard to beat.
The signals that you have outgrown a simpler store: variants and inventory that need real management, multiple sales channels, or shipping rules that are more than a flat rate. A smaller catalog can also fit Shopify when direct-to-consumer selling is the business and the store needs room to grow. Our HYLOR launch storefront is an example: it introduces four flavors and builds a First Taste list ahead of the first online orders.
What it does well
- Inventory and variants handled properly at scale
- A mature checkout backed by years of ecommerce development
- Multi-channel selling across your site, social, and marketplaces
- A large app ecosystem for specialized needs
- Infrastructure designed for high order volume
What to know before choosing it
The costs have layers. There is a monthly plan, payment processing, and often paid apps. Shopify also charges additional transaction fees when a third-party payment provider is used, while eligible orders processed through Shopify Payments are not subject to that extra fee. The total can add up quickly.
Apps become dependencies. The same trap as WordPress plugins, if you are undisciplined about it. We keep the stack small.
Theme customization has limits unless you go deep into its templating language, which is a development cost.
If you are smaller than this
For a modest catalog, especially if you already use Square in person, Square Online will serve you better and cost less. For a handful of products alongside a marketing site, Webflow has ecommerce built in.
The right choice depends on the catalog, operations, and expected sales volume, not simply the longest feature list.
