Software & AI

Give one repetitive task to a carefully limited agent

Purpose-built agents that use approved information and limited tools to handle routine questions, triage, scheduling, follow-up, and other defined work.

AI Agents

What we mean by an AI agent

An AI agent is software designed to pursue a defined task using a model, instructions, approved information, and a limited set of tools. Depending on the job, a tool might search internal material, classify an inquiry, prepare a response, update a record, or request approval from a person.

Not every automation needs AI. Agents are most useful when the work involves interpreting varied language or context, while the goal and boundaries remain clear.

Anatomy of an AI agent

Anatomy of an AI Agent

A typical agent may include:

  • Model: The reasoning and language component.
  • Instructions: Rules describing the task, boundaries, and expected behavior.
  • Approved knowledge: Website content, documents, policies, products, or records the agent is allowed to use.
  • Context: Information retained for the current task or conversation when needed.
  • Tools: Narrow actions such as searching, booking, drafting, routing, or updating an approved system.
  • Handoff: A clear path to a person when the request falls outside the agent’s role.

Work an agent may support

  • Answering routine questions from documented information
  • Classifying and routing incoming inquiries
  • Preparing scheduling or follow-up actions
  • Looking up information in approved documents
  • Drafting routine communication for review
  • Collecting context before a person takes over

The exact action and approval model depends on the consequences of a mistake. Sensitive, unusual, financial, or difficult-to-reverse actions require stronger controls and human review.

How we build them

Narrow scope. The first version handles one job with a result that can be reviewed. Broad assistants are difficult to evaluate and easy to trust beyond their ability.

Grounded responses. When an agent answers a business question, it should rely on approved sources and identify when those sources do not contain the answer.

Limited permissions. Access is restricted to what the task requires. Sending, changing records, spending money, or deleting information should never be assumed.

Testing and monitoring. We test expected requests, edge cases, handoffs, and failures before launch, then review real use and adjust the system.

For organizations that need a focused website assistant rather than a custom agent, Add On AI Chat provides a managed option built for small businesses and nonprofits. More of our implementation work is available at MIS, Inc. AI.

What happens next

Tell us which repeated task takes time from your team. We will assess whether an agent, a standard automation, or a simpler process is the better answer.
